In the wake of the failed Christmas eve bombing of a US-bound airliner by a Nigerian, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a full body scanner is being installed at the Kotoka International Airport.
This is to step up security at the airport given that the suspected bomber passed through Ghana on his suicide-bombing journey.
A Deputy Information Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah the installation of the security equipment – which even the United Kingdom is yet to acquire – underpins the government’s commitment to fighting terrorism.
He assured that the government will continue to collaborate effectively with security agencies elsewhere in an effort to disincentivise terrorism.
Mr Ablakwa contends that the fact that the United States, the target of the botched bombing, did not include Ghana in the countries whose citizens entering that country should be vigorously screened is testimony to the government’s efforts at fighting terrorism.
The US has introduced tougher screening rules for passengers arriving by air from 14 nations which the authorities deem to be a security risk.
